Broken to Blended Devotional
Encouragement for Blended Families
From the Back Cover
Samara Ashley is a pastor’s wife and mom who knows what it’s like to raise a blended family. She and her husband Steve merged their families in 2008 and now parent five children. Together, they have a heart for blended families and feel a burden to support and encourage others in the same situation. They live in North Carolina and are active in church ministry there.
Broken to Blended is a devotional journal designed for Christian parents involved in blended families. A new marriage can be difficult enough to manage, but when a couple faces the added complexities of a blended family, stress levels can go through the roof. Not only must the couple deal with the children – his and hers – but also ex-spouses, grandparents, and other extended family members.
With all the strong opinions mixed into a couple’s marriage, it’s no wonder blended families need love, encouragement, and support. Samara Ashley knows how to speak to blended families because she’s part of one…and she knows that love brings families together. Love – for each other, and for God – can also keep them together, so she provides thoughts, ideas, and encouragements to warm your heart and refresh your soul.
Few books have captured my heart while reinforcing the truths of the Bible like Broken to Blended. Samara’s straightforward approach compels the reader to venture beyond the safe waters of family normalcy, and dive into the exciting though turbulent seas of blending a family together.
Samara’s wonderfully written narrative overflows with Godly wisdom and practical common sense that places you right inside the house—dirty laundry and all! You soon discover that your situation is not unique, and more importantly, you are not alone…God is walking with you through every treacherous chapter.
Writing from the experiences of her tragedies and triumphs affords Samara a perspective that offers readers insights into challenges experienced by blended families. Sage advice such as your spouse being a higher priority than your children (since most second marriages end in divorce), and relenting the title of “super hero” and “control freak” are Biblical precepts that often are ignored by authors.
Samara’s devotions are saliently transparent and brutally honest. A classic example is the discussion of the multiple parents and grandparents discussed in, Day 24: The Not-So-Hallmark-Holidays. It’s the stuff nobody wants to talk about but everybody is thinking! Her transparency is paralleled with writing that reflects a humble sensitivity rather than a vengeful anger. The outcome is a vision of the unmistakable hand of God right in the middle of her storm (See, Day 18: Life as a Soap Opera).
As one who was a widower with two children who was blessed to remarry, Broken to Blended is not just another story. It’s my story as well. And, I suspect this is the story for so many voiceless folks who think they’re in this squall alone and no one else could possibly relate. And then, right in the middle of the storm comes Samara, paddling a lifeboat through the choppy seas, reminding us gently though firmly that there is freedom from your past, and that God loves using the awkward, the unusual and the difficult for His glory.
Dear reader, grab hold of this wonderful devotional and don’t let go until God has etched indelibly upon your heart the truths that with Him, all things are possible, and that His Son makes all things new!

I got this thinking I so need help figuring this whole blended dynamic family out. Thing is, I can’t get it away from my husband long enough to read! He is a mental health therapist and said it is one of the best blended family books he has came across. So I’m giving it 5 on his recommendation.
