Living in a lust driven culture, we are being lured into a lifestyle that is contrary to God’s Word. My friend Dr. Rick Rigsby once said this, “We live in a superficial culture that says we don’t have to be godly, we just have to offer the appearance of godliness.” This type of behavior is rampant in our culture and it must make God sick! He sent His only Son Jesus to die for our sins and Jesus was our ransom to pay the sin debt that we owe. Live life as if the cross is right before you; it will change how we live each day.
As men of God we must be pro active in keeping our hearts and minds pure. The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 12, do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Remember this, we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and spiritual wickedness, we are in a battle! As a man, I know how difficult it is to keep our hearts and minds pure and I want to share with you ten disciplines of a godly man that we can find in the Word of God.
But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 1 Timothy 6:11
Here are 10 disciplines of a godly man.
“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” (Philippians 2:3-5)
“We prove ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, by the Holy Spirit within us, and by our sincere love.” (2 Corinthians 6:6)
“Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.” (Proverbs 3:3) “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.” (Galatians 5:22)
“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” (Colossians 3:13)
“Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.” (Proverbs 2:2)
“People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed.” (Proverbs 10:9)
“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” (Hebrews 11:2)
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 14:16)
A true man, like Jesus, is obedient to the Father’s will and is about His Father’s business (Hebrews 10:9). This is such a powerful truth, and it’s one that Christian men cannot look past. I want to encourage you to meditate on these characteristics and scriptures. Be proactive, be the man of God that He has created you to be.
Remember this, Joseph may have lost his coat, but he kept his character!
Flee physically and flee mentally from the things that are not pleasing to Adonai, Master overall! But as for you, O man of God, Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.
